Patients' preferences for positioning during phaco-emulsification under topical-intracameral anaesthesia

Tsatsos M et al. – Patients who sat up below 25° chose this position for comfort or preference. These results show that patient preferences for positioning during cataract phaco–emulsification under topical–intracameral anaesthesia should increase overall patient satisfaction without the need to compromise safety.

Our study shows that most patients are not happy with the traditional "lie flat" position for cataract surgery and most prefer to have the operating chair inclined at 10-30 degrees above horizontal. For experienced surgeons using topical or tpical-intracameral anaesthesia this should not give any added difficulty or surgical risk. Ensuring that each patient is positioned comfortably should improve overall satisfaction with cataract surgery.
