Tsugawa Y et al. – This study demonstrated good evidence of adequate reliability and validity of the P–MEX for the assessment of professionalism among Japanese residents. Moreover, the addition of new items developed in Japan provided adequate factor validity.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Yusuke Tsugawa, 09/21/09

Measuring medical professionalism is a challenge. If our measuring rule were distorted, how can we evaluate and cultivate the subjects (residents) appropriately? It is why the measuring tools need to be reliable. The P-MEX is a promising tool for evaluating medical professionalism developed and verified at McGill University, Canada. We demonstrated its validity and reliability in Japan, and to the best of our knowledge, P-MEX has become the sole professionalism evaluation tool the utility of which was proven in multiple countries. If P-MEX were employed in many countries in the future, we believe that P-MEX would become the de-facto standard for measuring medical professionalism worldwide.
