Sibbitt WL et al. – Sonographic needle guidance significantly improves the performance and outcomes of outpatient IA injections in a clinically significant manner.

Exclusive Author Commentary
W.L. Sibbitt, 09/17/09

This article represents the first in a series of outcome studies regarding the combined use of sonographic needle guidance with the patient safety technology, the reciprocating procedure device (RPD syringe). The present article demonstrates significant outcome benefits using sonographic guidance compared to the conventional syringe using palpation, including markedly reduced procedural pain and markedly improved response to intraarticularly injected medications. Followup studies are concentrating on changes in long-term outcomes (6 month), changes in health care service utilizations with combined sonographic-RPD procedures, and outcome in individual joints and individual forms of arthritis (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, etc).
