Discharge Planning Curricula in Internal Medicine Residency Programs: A National Survey

Aiyer M et al. – The majority of the PDs agreed that DPC should be an important curricular component, yet only a few programs offered formal discharge planning education. Residency programs need to address this critical aspect of patient care within the core curricula.

Discharge planning is an important and critical aspect of inpatient care.
A formal discharge–planning curricula is offered in only a few internal medicine residency programs.
The content areas covered in the curriculum include hospital resources to coordinate transition of care and communication skills.
The majority of program directors perceive that discharge planning should be an important part of the residency curriculum.
Studies need to be done to assess the impact of a formal discharge planning curriculum on patient care and patient satisfaction.
