Agrawal V et al. – This brief questionnaire is a valid and reliable instrument to assess knowledge of CKD guidelines among internal medicine residents and identify specific gaps for improvement.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Varun Agrawal, 08/11/09

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a growing health problem that needs to be diagnosed and treated adequately before patients progress to the need for dialysis. The National Kidney Foundation devised the Kidney Disease Outcome Quality Initiative (KDOQI) guidelines to help primary care physicians manage CKD. Our study tested the knowledge and attitudes of internal medicine residents towards diagnosing CKD, identifying patients at high risk for CKD, goal blood pressure targets and importantly timing of referral to the nephrologist. In this paper, we present the questionnaire instrument that was used to collect the above data variables. We identified numerous deficiencies in the knowledge of CKD among medicine residents. This has numerous implications for program directors who can focus efforts on improving CKD knowledge among residents. The questionnaire can also be used to test the effect of educational interventions.
