| Medical schools have traditionally taught clinical medicine through a sequence of clerkships in key medical specialties. This paper documents the growing worldwide use of longer term clerkships that feature integration of the key specialties. The integration is accomplished by utilizing either a long term assignment of a student to a primary care practice, or by creating an integrated schedule for the student consisting of time spent each week in multiple specialty settings. Overall the experience with longitudinal integrated clerkships has been positive, but more research is needed on several aspects of the programs. |
