Annals of Surgical Oncology, 04/09/08
Zerbi A et al. - Pts with pancreatic metastases from RCC in a favorable risk grp are resection candidates, regardless of the presence of another metastatic site or multifocal pancreatic disease
Methods- Retrospective study of 36 pts with pancreatic metastasis from RCC to define surgery's role in treatment
- Categorization into 3 risk grps based on modified Memorial Sloan-Kettering prognostic factors model
- Resective surgery in 23 pts: 11 distal pancreatectomy, 5 enucleation, 4 pancreatoduodenectomy, 2 total pancreatectomy, 1 middle pancreatectomy
- No perioperative mortality; morbidity rate, 47.8%
- All resection pts were in the favorable risk grp
- Surgical resection excluded in 13 cases due to disease locally advanced (2 pts) or extrapancreatic (11 pts); risk in these pts was favorable (5), intermediate (7), and poor (1)
- Surgical pts: 5-year actuarial survival rate, 88%; median disease-free survival, 44 mo
- Non-surgical pts: 5-yr survival rate, 47%; median survival, 27 mo
