Gratwohl A et al. – Knowledge of the many potential skin changes before, during and after HSCT is a prerequisite for correct diagnosis and management and requires detailed understanding of that complex therapeutic procedure. Pathology of the skin can be influenced by many factors, including the basic disease, toxic reactions to the conditioning regimen, infections, drug reactions, acute and chronic graft–versus–host disease and other late effects of HSCT. Cutaneous changes can be localized or generalized and include changes in color, texture or tissue content. They can reflect a generalized multiorgan or a skin–restricted pathology. Clinical examination of skin, mucous membranes and adnexal structures and skin biopsies are the two most essential tools for correct diagnosis. Treatment of the underlying pathology and supportive care measures remain the main therapeutic tools.
