Hwang JC et al. – There is a close link between decreased retinal blood flow and visual field loss in glaucoma that is largely independent of structural loss.

Up to now glaucoma evaluation by advanced imaging techniques have concentrated on imaging of structures such as the optic disc topography (cup & rim), nerve fiber layer, and ganglion cell complex. Our paper shows that total retinal blood flow can also be accurately measured with optical coherence tomography (OCT)and that blood flow is actually more closed linked to visual field (VF) loss than structural variable. This opens up a new avenue of research in glaucoma physiology and clinical evaluation.
