Leung ETY et al. – In conclusion, an optimized DNA extraction protocol coupled with a novel multi–probe multiplex real–time PCR for direct detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) and Beijing/W MTB was found to confer high sensitivity and specificity. The combined procedure has the potential to compensate the drawbacks of conventional mycobacterial culture in routine clinical laboratory setting, such as the lengthy incubation period and the limitation to viable organisms.

The conventional culture to confirm MTB takes several weeks. Hope this new protocol could help in clinical diagnosis.
