Ravona–Springer R et al. – The tendency toward RT when confronting distress is associated with a lower risk for dementia. Future studies should assess possible mechanisms and potentials for intervention and modification.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Ramit Ravona-Springer, 12/10/09

Previous studies have addressed the association between personality traits and dementia, demonstrating neuroticism is associated with increased risk for dementia. In these studies, personality characteristics were usually assessed at advanced age, which carries high risk for conversion to dementia. In our study, psychological- cognitive characteristics were measured several decades prior to dementia assessment, thus reducing the possiblity that personality traits may be early markers of cognitive decline.
