MRI Detection of New Microbleeds in Patients With Ischemic Stroke. Five-Year Cohort Follow-Up Study
Stroke, 11/09/09
Gregoire SM et al. – Patients with ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack are at risk of developing new microbleeds over 5.5 years, despite most surviving patients remaining clinically stable. Systolic blood pressure is the strongest predictor of microbleed development; better control of hypertension may help prevent new microbleed formation.
David J. Werring, 11/11/09
| Whilst many cross-sectional studies show a strong relationship between hypertension and brain microbleeds, this follow-up study is new in showing that baseline blood pressure is a predictor of developing new microbleeds over five years. This study strengthens the causal link between blood pressure and microbleeds, and suggests that finding microbleeds should encourage careful control of hypertension. |
