Ghrelin Receptor Expression in Lymphocytes Isolated from Adult Cystic Fibrosis Patients
Respiration, 10/30/09
Cohen RI et al. – Differences exist in ghrelin receptor expression in lymphocytes isolated from stable CF patients with different BMIs. These changes may be due to a disordered pathological response to weight loss.
Rubin I. Cohen, 10/30/09
| In a previous study, we found that serum ghrelin levels were elevated in patients with advanced CF and low BMI. Since ghrelin is a peptide that stimulates appetite, this finding appears to be a physiological response to weight loss, rather than its cause. In the present study we compared ghrelin receptor expression on isolated lymphocytes form healthy controls, and CF subjects with normal and low BMI. We found decreased expression of ghrelin receptors on isolated lymphocytes from subjects with advanced CF and low BMI. This suggests a disordered pathological response and further implicates a link between eating behavior, weight loss and the inflammatory response. |
