Bizzini M et al. – The injury rates were similar for referees officiating at an adult level, but lower at a junior level. In comparison with elite football referees, the incidence of training injuries and the prevalence of musculo–skeletal complaints were lower in amateur referees. Nevertheless, preventive programs are indicated for referees at all levels, especially when considering the length of a referee's career.

Mario Bizzini, 10/30/09

Despite the important role of the referee in football (soccer), little scientific literature is available on refereeing. Studies have examined various physiological aspects of performance and training of these individuals, but little is known about their injury profile. This article is the last of a serie of four papers dedicated to injuries and musculoskeletal complaints of football referees. It highlights the needs of these athletes in terms of medical care and injury prevention within their training and match regimens.
