Aerobic Exercise Increases Peripheral and Hepatic Insulin Sensitivity in Sedentary Adolescents
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, 10/14/09
Heijden G–J et al. – This well accepted aerobic exercise program, without weight loss, is a promising strategy to improve peripheral and hepatic insulin sensitivity in lean and obese sedentary adolescents. The small decrease in GPR is probably of limited clinical relevance.
Agneta L. Sunehag, 10/14/09
| 14 lean and 15 obese post pubertal sedentary adolescents completed a 12 week (4x30 min/week) aerobic exercise program. The participants attended 90% of the exercise sessions. The program resulted in an increase in fitness by 15%, in peripheral insulin sensitivity by 59% and hepatic insulin sensitivity by 35%. We also observed a small decrease in hepatic glucose production. The clinical relevans of this decrease might be minimal in our participants who had normal glucose tolerance. However, it might be of importance in diabetic and glucose intolerant individuals, but this issue requires further research. |
