Rahilly–Tierney CR et al. – In a cohort of veterans at high risk for cardiovascular events, patients of all ages, including those 80 years or older, benefitted the most from large reductions in LDL–C.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Catherine R. Rahilly-Tierney, 10/02/09

In this cohort of veterans at high risk for adverse cardiac events, we found that veterans across quartiles of age benefitted quantitatively similarly for a given reduction in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). That is, subjects with the largest change in LDL-C achieved approximately 70% risk reduction, regardless of their age. Moreover, in veterans of any age, we found that the size of cardiovascular risk reduction was graded and proportional to the size of LDL-C change, regardless of whether subjects achieved pre-determined "target" LDL-C levels. Our study corroborates qualitatively and quantitatively those of previous researchers, who have demonstrated a linear relationship between cholesterol change and cardiovascular benefit.
