Taking the MRCP early on
BMJ Career Focus, 09/28/09
Maryam Z – Getting a training number seems to be becoming increasingly difficult. Some of my senior colleagues have remarked on the noticeably higher expectations for entry to specialty trainee level. Indeed, a few have even said that they are uncertain if they would have made it had the conditions been the same when they were trainees. Pros:
- Adds a competitive edge to your CV and demonstrates dedication to your career
- Frees up time for specialty trainee application in January; this time could also be spent improving your CV in other ways
- Membership is internationally recognised and respected.
- May be a costly mock exam considering the high failure rates, especially for MRCP part 1
- Status of membership examination is currently uncertain, and there are talks of it being abolished completely
- Many sleepless nights spent revising.
