Warren–Findlow J et al. – Sufficient evidence demonstrates that the effects of weight status on cardiovascular and metabolic risk can be mediated by physical activity and CRF (5–9). Public health researchers should refocus their investigations to better understand the separate effects of diet and physical activity in the total population, regardless of a person’s weight status, and use the most objective measures possible. These efforts will enable us to determine the most favorable physical activity and fitness levels for all Americans to reach optimal health and prevent illness.

Jan Warren-Findlow, 09/21/09

The take-away message for health care providers is to focus on assessing patients' physical activity level as a key preventive factor for chronic disease prevention and management. Physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness are important risk factors for all patients, not just those who need to lose weight, and not only as a technique for weight loss.
