Autonomic Neuroscience, 09/09/09
Billhult A et al. – A single full-body light pressure effleurage massage has a short-term effect on NK cell activity, SBP, and HR in patients with breast cancer.
Methods- Single centre, prospective, randomized and controlled study
- 30 women, 50-75 y of age (mean, 61 y) with breast cancer undergoing RT
- They were allocated to either receive massage in the form of a full-body light pressure effleurage treatment, or a control visit where they were given an equal amount of attention
- Light pressure effleurage massage decreased the deterioration of NK cell activity occurring during RT Furthermore it lowered HR and SBP
- No effects were demonstrated on cortisol and DBP
