Skin disorders in patients with hemiplegia and papaplegia

Gul U et al. – Dermatologic disorders are observed more commonly in hemiplegic and paraplegic pts vs controls; thus routine dermatologic examination should be performed in these pts.
Methods- Study of the incidence of skin disorders in pts with hemiplegia and paraplegia
- Assessment of 70 inpatients with hemiplegia, 30 with paraplegia, and 90 controls
- Most common skin disorder for pts: tinea pedis (18 of 100 pts)
- Other common dermatologic disorders in pts: onychomycosis of toenails (14 pts), xerosis of extremities (13), and reduced hair on lower extremities (12)
- Significantly more common tinea pedis, onychomycosis of toenails, xerosis of extremities and reduced hair on lower extremities for pts vs controls
- No significant correlation between duration of hemiplegia and paraplegia and tinea pedis, onychomycosis of toenails, xerosis of extremities and reduced hair on lower extremities
