Skin disorders in patients with hemiplegia and papaplegia

Gul U et al. – Dermatologic disorders are observed more commonly in hemiplegic and paraplegic pts vs controls; thus routine dermatologic examination should be performed in these pts.

Methods

Study of the incidence of skin disorders in pts with hemiplegia and paraplegia
Assessment of 70 inpatients with hemiplegia, 30 with paraplegia, and 90 controls

Results

Most common skin disorder for pts: tinea pedis (18 of 100 pts)
Other common dermatologic disorders in pts: onychomycosis of toenails (14 pts), xerosis of extremities (13), and reduced hair on lower extremities (12)
Significantly more common tinea pedis, onychomycosis of toenails, xerosis of extremities and reduced hair on lower extremities for pts vs controls
No significant correlation between duration of hemiplegia and paraplegia and tinea pedis, onychomycosis of toenails, xerosis of extremities and reduced hair on lower extremities
