Traumatic brain injury and sleep disturbance: A review of current research
Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation, 05/27/09
Orff HJ et al. – Sleep disturbance is a common consequence of traumatic brain injury (TBI), but more research must elucidate this relationship. Future study in this population must focus on: 1) specific TBI types, causes, and severity most often leading to sleep problems; (2) specific consequences of sleep disturbance; and 3) most effective strategies for treatment of sleep-wake abnormalities.
Methods- Review of current literature on significant prevalence and potential consequences of sleep disturbance following TBI, particularly mild TBI
- Search of PubMed and Ovid/MEDLINE databases by key words sleep disturbance, insomnia, TBI, brain injury, and circadian rhythms
- Review of additional sources: abstracts from annual Associated Professional Sleep Societies meeting
- Sequelae of TBI: both medical and psychiatric symptoms and frequent complaints of sleep disturbance
- Sleep disturbances likely result from and contribute to multiple factors associated with TBI, all of which complicate recovery and symptom resolution
- Mild TBI may be more correlated with increased likelihood of sleep disturbance than severe forms of TBI
