Three quarters of Australians do not realise family history is a risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes and 97 per cent of people who have the potentially fatal disease in their family don't believe their children are at risk. These alarming new research findings have been released to encourage more awareness of the genetic role in type 2 diabetes which can cause heart attacks, blindness and amputation and accounts for 85-90 per cent of all 1.5 million diabetics in the nation.
