Barber FA et al. - Iliotibial band (ITB) syndrome or iliotibial band friction syndrome is a common lateral knee injury caused by overuse. It is commonly seen in runners and cyclists. Two mechanisms have been proposed for this syndrome: either excessive friction resulting as the ITB slides back and forth over the lateral femoral epicondyle, or the changing tension in the anterior and posterior fibers of the ITB compresses the fat between the tract and a bursa creating inflammation and merely the illusion of movement.
