Rosenthal PJ - The WHO recommends intravenous artesunate as the treatment of choice for severe malaria in adults and children in areas of low transmission. Data on children in high-transmission regions are limited, and the WHO recommends treatment with artesunate, artemether, or quinine. For severe malaria during pregnancy, additional data regarding the risks of artemisinins are needed. The WHO recommends artesunate or quinine during the first trimester and artesunate as the first-line therapy during the second and third trimesters.
