Cellular traffic of lipids and calcium at membrane contact sites (CME)

Date:
October 6-9, 2011
Location:
Snowbird, Utah 84199, United States
Description:
Intracellular signalling, lipid homeostasis, and vesicular trafficking are critical cellular functions. There is growing evidence that MCSs play an important role in all these processes. MCSs are dynamic structures formed by close contacts between the endoplasmic reticulum and other organelles. They have been observed in all eukaryotic cells and are thought to be regions where small molecules, such lipids and calcium ions, or other signals are transferred between organelles. However, in most cases, the structure and functions of MCSs remains poorly understood. In the past few years, a number of proteins required for the formation and function of MCSs have been identified.
