HIV–infected patients requiring MV have significantly higher mortality and Ventilator–associated pneumonia rates than HIV–negative patients. Since Ventilator–associated pneumonia is associated with a poor prognosis, discovering ways to prevent it in the HIV–infected patient may improve outcome.
