Probability of urinary tract infection in infants with ureteropelvic junction obstruction: is antibacterial prophylaxis really needed

Pediatric Nephrology, 05/04/2011

Prophylactic antibiotic usage is not indicated in infants with ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO), regardless of the severity of hydronephrosis, as the risk of urinary tract infection (UTI) is minimal in this population. The distribution of patients in each hydronephrosis grading group was incidentally similar. Within a median follow–up period of 18 (12–24) months, none of the patients had UTI. No pyelonephritic scar was found on Dimercaptosuccinate (DMSA) scans in any patient.
