Drahos J et al. – The results suggest that IPS–1 is cleaved during HRV1a infection by three different proteases. Cleavage of IPS–1 may be a mechanism for evasion of the type I IFN response, leading to a more robust infection.

Infection of cultured cells by rhinovirus leads to very low induction of interferon. We carried out these studies to determine the reason for low interferon induction. The results indicate that a critical protein in the pathway leading to IFN induction, called IPS-1, is degraded during rhinovirus infection. Important follow-up questions to this work are: does cleavage of IPS-1 occur in the animal, and is this accompanied by reduced levels of IFN? Although rhinovirus infections are acute and self-limiting, they might be even shorter if a more robust IFN response took place.
