Multi-modal Aedes aegypti mosquito reduction interventions and dengue fever prevention
Tropical Medicine & International Health, 09/30/09
Ballenger–Browning KK et al. – Little evidence exists to support the efficacy of mosquito abatement programs owing to poor study designs and lack of congruent entomologic indices. Creation of a standard entomological index, use of clustered and randomized–controlled trials, and testing the generalizability of proven methods are recommended for future research.

| While only supportive therapy is available for the treatment of dengue fever, it is of great importance for effective prevention strategies to be devleoped and implemented. Due to poor methodological designs, many of the mosquito abatement interventions that exist today show little signs of success. The most promising interventions appeared to be intergrated control strategies that involved a biological component, such as copepods or bacteria. Despite this finding, more research using clustered randomized control trials are necessary to prove the efficacy of such methods. In addition, it is recommended that communities be consulted in the design of such interventions to ensure that the methods chosen are suitable and acceptable for the individuals involved. |
