Mascio MD et al. – Positron emission tomography imaging of the fluorine–18 analogue revealed the accumulation of the antiretroviral drug in the cortex of the kidneys, a potential correlate of tenofovir–induced nephrotoxicity observed in HIV–1–infected treated patients.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Michele Di Mascio, 09/22/09

Positron Emission Tomography allows to image non-invasively the distribution of an anti-HIV drug, Tenofovir, in vivo in the whole body. The study reveals the differential penetration of the drug in anatomic compartments and a preferential accumulation of the drug in the cortex of the kidney, not previously reported in animal models or humans.
