Evidence of Pathogenic Subgroups among Atypical Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli

Scaletsky ICA et al. – The authors describe the characterization of 126 atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli strains isolates from 1,749 Brazilian children. Classic aEPEC strains were more frequently found in children with diarrhea than controls showing its importance as acute diarrhea agents in this country. Only aEPEC strains carrying either ehxA or paa genes were significantly associated with diarrhea.
