General practitioner involvement and patient outcomes in HIV management

Casserly SM et al. - Patients diagnosed with an STI were less likely to disclose their HIV status to their GP. Non-disclosure of the HIV status to a GP may be a predictor of unsafe sexual practices.

We thought that patients who did not want their primary care physician to be informed of their HIV diagnosis might suffer poorer health as a result of this. However, HIV-related outcomes were unaffected. The association between non-disclosure and STI's was unexpected. Ambivalence about engagement with healthcare professionals may be a marker for ambivalence about following safe sex advice - something that HIV physicians should always keep in mind
