Howell MD et al. - Eczema vaccinatum is a potentially fatal, disseminated viral skin infection that develops in individuals with atopic dermatitis after exposure to the vaccinia virus (VV). The authors suggests that treatment with CSA-13 may be an intervention for individuals with a disseminated VV skin infection.

| Ceragenins are a class of compounds initially designed to mimic endogenously produced anti-microbial peptides. These compounds exhibit broad spectrum activity against bacteria and viruses. In this study we demonstrate that ceragenins (i.e. CSA-13) can be used to kill and control the pathogenesis of orthopoxviruses using vaccinia virus as the model. This suggests that ceragenins may be useful as anti-viral treatment for individuals suffering from vaccinia viral infections such as eczema vaccinatum or progressive vaccinia. |
