Emergence of KPC Producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Trinidad & Tobago
Journal of Clinical Microbiology, 06/05/09
Akpaka PE et al. - In 2006, the first isolate of KPC-2 producing P. aeruginosa in the world was identified in Colombia. Recently, similar strains have been reported from Puerto Rico. Surveillance for similar strains is warranted considering their wide geographic spread and known association with mobile genetic elements.
Patrick E. Akpaka, 06/05/09
| Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemases (KPC) are enzymes that hydrolyze the carbapenems by enterobacteriaceae groups of organisms. To acquire them by other family of bacterial organisms such as Pseudomonas species is lethal. A patient doesn't need to travel to endemic areas to get infected by bugs producing KPC like the Pseudomonas aeruginosa since the means of spread could be through mobile genetic elements. Infection by this KPC producers results in pan antimicrobial resistance leaving little or no therapeutic choices. The end result of this is high morbidity and mortality. Our best bet is to be on the "look out" for such bugs and do all that is necessary to stop their spread. |
