Ajmal M et al. - Study concludes that among renal transplant patients, statin usage does not appear to lower the risk of ostronecrosis (ON). The number of rejection episodes and male gender was associated with a higher risk.
Methods- Goal of the present study was to determine if statin usage in renal transplantation pts is associated with a reduction in incidence of ON
- 2,881 pts who met the entry criteria:
- 1,752 (61%) male and 1,129 (39%) female
- Among the 2,881 pts, 1,619 had varying levels of exposure to statins
- However, only 338 pts met the authors' on-statins definition
- Among 338 pts on statins, 15 (4.4%) developed osteonecrosis, vs 180 of 2,543 (7%) pts who were not on statins
- Osteonecrosis-free survival was similar in pts with and without statin exposure
