Combes JR – Evaluation of health care governing board performance has been around for more than 20 years—and what a difference two decades makes. The Joint Commission's original standard issued in 1986 called for boards to evaluate their own performance. Typically, board members completed a survey assessing how and how well the full board discharged its responsibilities. Then the board would meet to discuss survey results and identify strengths and weaknesses.
