Medicaid Incentives: Bureaucracy Will Reign

The federal government will reimburse states for 100% of Medicaid incentive payments made to providers for meaningful use of electronic health records under the economic stimulus law, according to initial guidance from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. But a sizable bureaucratic burden to justify state health information technology initiatives–and coordinate those initiatives with federal efforts–will accompany the funds.
