The role of patients in clinical ethics support: a snapshot of practices and attitudes in the United Kingdom
Clinical Ethics, 09/16/09
Newson AJ – Results suggest that patient participation in clinical ethics consultation is low and unlikely to change significantly in the near future. Attitudes towards patients having a role in clinical ethics consultation are mixed, with a variety of reasons put forward both for and against patient participation. These results are discussed in the light of common themes in the literature and the practical and political context of clinical ethics support in the UK.

| This exploratory questionnaire study was carried out to begin to benchmark the role that patients play in clinical ethics support in the United Kingdom. Unlike the US, clinical ethics committees are not mandated in UK hospitals and patients play a lesser role. Debate over patient involvement has not been as prominent in the UK as it has been in the US, although similar issues and questions are already arising. It is planned that this paper will form the basis for a larger, more in-depth study and to also take forward the ethical debate over patients' access to, consent to, and involvement in clinical ethics case consultation. The paper forms part of a special section in Volume 4(3) of Clinical Ethics, a journal published by RSM Press in London. The series of papers deliberates and compares the role of patients in clinical ethics across Europe. |
