The Institute for Safe Medication Practices recently recommended greater education and steps to prevent inadequate amounts of sodium in intravenous solutions used to hydrate children after surgery. Post–operative children are at high risk for developing hyponatremia, an electrolyte disorder that can be caused by administering IV fluids that contain inadequate sodium.
