Anderson HJ – In 2005, the hospitals had $12 million in bad debt and very little charity care, the CFO says. For 2009, they expect to have only $3 million in bad debt and $11 million in charity care. Although offsetting charity care with income from insured and self–pay patients continues to be a challenge, the hospital is reaping significant savings by no longer paying staff members or outside agencies to make unsuccessful attempts to collect money from what turn out to be charity cases.
