America’s hospitals provide compassion, care and curing 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In 2007 alone, hospitals provided $34 billion in uncompensated care – vastly more than any other provider group in the health care field. While an enormous figure, it does not include many billions of dollars more that hospitals spent on valuable community service programs, such as research, teaching, subsidized care, neonatal and burn care, and other activities designed to promote and protect the health and well-being of the community.
