Improving system efficiency through better maintenance
Health Facilities Management, 06/11/09
Grindall W - Health facilities professionals entering a new hospital environment may find it daunting, at first, to assess where efficiencies can be captured. A close examination of the assets within the four main segments of the steam system-generation, distribution, end-use application and condensate recovery-is sure to uncover areas of opportunity. Indeed, steam is costly and, when purchased from municipalities or steam loops, it can run more than $30 per 1,000 pounds of steam. Even when facilities have their own boilers, the cost is still significant-about $12 to $17 per 1,000 pounds.
