The importance of URAC HIPAA accreditation standards to protect consumer privacy and security

Consumer vulnerability was the original impetus for the privacy and security provisions of HIPAA. The principles were developed to protect the ordinary individual’s rights to privacy and security in connection with the electronic transmission of health information. While HIPAA was created to gain efficiency and save money through the use of electronic payment systems, Congress also recognized the need for comprehensive federal health information privacy protections in this arena. HIPAA privacy and security provisions require that “covered entities”—health plans, health care providers and specific other entities that handle health data—abide by regulatory standards to protect personal health information.
