Neubauer H et al. – Cigarette smoking activates platelets (P–selectin expression) and stimulates the CD40–CD40L–pathway in otherwise healthy volunteers. These findings emphasize that cigarette smoking leads to a proinflammatory and prothrombotic state thus contributing to accelerated atherosclerosis.
