Mitchell SA et al. – Results suggest two possible mechanisms underlying impaired functional performance in survivors with cGVHD and underscore the importance of testing interventions to enhance functional capacity and reduce symptom bother.

Exclusive Author Commentary
SA Mitchell, 10/02/09

Our findings lend support for an interdisciplinary approach to the evaluation and supportive management of long-term survivors of allogeneic HSCT with chronic GVHD. However, ensuring that rehabilitation needs are systematically evaluated and addressed through tailored, interdisciplinary interventions is especially challenging in this population of long-term HSCT survivors who despite the presence of chronic GVHD have returned to their home communities and thus may be evaluated less frequently at the transplant center. To optimize rehabilitation outcomes, development and testing of innovative service delivery models and changes in health policy are urgently needed.
