Swayampakula AK et al. – The role of the serum HER2/neu assay in the management of metastatic breast cancer is still evolving. The authors report the case of a 78–year–old woman who was treated with modified radical mastectomy and tamoxifen for stage II infiltrating ductal carcinoma in 1991. This case demonstrates the potential utility of assessing HER2/neu levels in serum as an alternative to tissue specimens in patients who have no tissue available for testing.
