Quiroga T et al. – Normal PA with adrenaline and low ADP concentration robustly predict a normal PA. Simultaneous PA/PS assays enable the diagnosis of isolated PS defects. This study confirmed that hereditary PA–PS defects are highly prevalent.

Standardized platelet aggregation and serotonin secretion assays are highly consistent with more than 90% reproducibility, both in healthy controls and patient populations. These are specially suited for diagnosis of mild platelet function defects. This study found that a normal platelet aggregation using 10 micromolar adrenaline is strongly predictive of a normal platelet aggregation, e.g., 93% of the patients with hereditary mucous and skin bleeding who have a maximal percent of aggregation of 42% or more with adrenaline end up with an overall normal platelet aggregation. Furthermore, this study found that up to 14.3% of the patients may have an abnormal platelet serotonin secretion with normal platelet aggregation, emphasizing the need to perform both studies simultaneously.
