Kim B–H et al. – Most of cancer–specific CpG island hypermethylation occur in the stage of BilIN and that CpG island hypermethylation seems to occur earlier than repetitive DNA element hypomethylation.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Gyeong Hoon Kang, 09/23/09

Our study has addressed that CpG island hypermethylation occurs early in the multistep carcinogenesis like other tissue types of carcinomas and most of cancer-specific hypermethylation occurs in biliary intraepithelial neoplasia stage. With this information, bile-based methylation detection is worth of being tried to detect extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and its premalignant lesion.
