Do recurrent and metastatic pancreatic cancer patients have the same outcomes with gemcitabine treatment?
Oncology (Karger), 09/08/09
Hashimoto K et al. – Recurrent pancreatic cancer after surgery and pancreatic cancer with primary metastasis can be similarly categorized in clinical trials.
Methods- 326 patients (65 recurrent and 261 metastatic patients who received gemcitabine monotherapy as 1st-line tx for advanced pancreatic cancer
- Recurrent patients had a significantly longer time to tx failure and survival (medians, 138 and 77 d, respectively) compared to metastatic patients (medians, 270 and 185 d, respectively
- Poor Karnofsky PS (< 80), presence of liver or peritoneal metastasis, elevated LDH (> 220 U/l), elevated alkaline phosphatase (>330 U/l), and elevated CRP (>1 mg/dl) were correlated with short survival
- Recurrent or metastatic ds was not correlated with survival
- Leukopenia was more frequent in the recurrent group
- RR were similar in the recurrent and metastatic groups
