Danforth KN et al. – Body size, alcohol intake, smoking and hysterectomy were related to androgen levels among postmenopausal women.
Methods- Cross-sectional analysis
- 646 postmenopausal women
- Free testosterone levels were 79% higher among women with a BMI ≥ 30 vs. ≤ 22 kg/m2
- Free testosterone levels were 25% higher among women with a wasit circumference > 89 cm vs. ≤ 74 cm
- Consuming > 30 g of alcohol a day vs. no alcohol was associated with a 31% increase in DHEA and a 59% increase in DHEAS
- Smoking ≥ cigarettes per day led to a 35% increase in adrostenedione and a 44% increase in testosterone than never smokers
- No significant associations existed for height or time since menopause with any androgens
- Testosterone and freee testosterone levels were 30% lower among women with a hysterectomy compared to those without
- Overall breast cancer risk was not associated with any of the androgens
